Causes and Prevention of Child Deaths

The Franklin County Child Fatality Review 3rd Annual Community Report outlines the causes of death for CFR Report Coverchildren under 18, and offers recommendations to healthcare providers, parents and the community to prevent future deaths.  The report summarizes the leading causes of death for Franklin County infants and children.  The report outlines the causes of all reviewed deaths, including:

          • prematurity
          • infant sleep related deaths
          • motor vehicle crashes
          • firearms and weapons

Based on the work of the Franklin County Child Fatality Review, this booklet is designed to help parents to identify threats to the well-being of their children and to provide the necessary information and resources, so that they can anticipate threats and know what to do to prevent them.  The report is available in three languages.

What is Child Fatality Review?

Administered by Columbus Public Health, The Franklin County Child Fatality Review (CFR) reviews the circumstances surrounding child deaths each year, and makes recommendations to reduce preventable infant and childhood deaths.  This community-based multi-disciplinary team, includes representatives from:

  • Columbus Public Health
  • Columbus Fire Department
  • Franklin County Coroners Office
  • Columbus Public Schools
  • Children’s Hospital
  • The Center for Child and Family Advocacy
  • Franklin County Children’s Services
  • Columbus Police Department and many other important partners
