Healthier Food for Your Community
January 24, 2006
Healthy eating is important to good health, but there can be barriers that make it more difficult. In some Columbus communities, access to healthy foods is a problem. There may be a lack of grocery stores, or existing stores may not carry a variety of healthy foods. If healthy food is offered, it may be expensive or of poor quality. Community residents may also lack transportation to get to existing food sources. Many communities have worked successfully to overcome some of these barriers. Improving Access to Healthy Food: A Community Planning Tool has been developed to help people find ways to bring healthier foods into their community. A product of the Columbus Health Department and the Greater Columbus Foodshed Project, it gives steps that communities can take to: Find out if getting healthy foods is a problem for residents. Develop ways to bring healthy foods into the community. Find out if your strategies are working.
The Columbus Health Department would like to work with people or organizations who would like to use this tool to improve residents’ access to healthy food in their Columbus neighborhood.
