Substance Use Treatable With Support
September 24, 2007

group of people

Substance use disorders are treatable.  In fact, many people in recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction lead successful, productive lives and make positive contributions to their workplace and community.  For many, a supportive worksite is critical in helping people become and stay sober.

Substance Abuse Impacts Work

man holding headSubstance use and abuse is not limited to after work hours, leading to the risk of being impaired while on the job.

        • An estimated 3.1 percent of employed adults actually used illicit drugs before reporting to work or during work hours at least once in the past year, with about 2.9 percent working while under the influence of an illicit drug.
        • An estimated 1.7 percent of employed adults worked while under the influence of alcohol, and 9.2 percent worked with a hangover in the past year.
        • Regardless of where illicit drug use or heavy alcohol use takes place, workers reporting substance use and abuse have higher rates of turnover and absenteeism.   (Source U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy)

Role of Employee Assistance Programs

couple with counselorEmployee assistance programs (EAP's) are workplace-based programs that help employees who are struggling with substance abuse and other issues which might be effecting job performance.

EAP's also assist supervisors in recognizing job performance signs where an employee may have a problem, like:

  • increased accidents
  • increased absenteeism and tardiness
  • poor interpersonal skills
  • increase in error rates

An effective EAP helps both the employee be at their healthiest, and the employer in providing a safe and effective workplace.
