Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as “staph,” are bacteria commonly carried carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people, but can sometimes cause an infection. MRSA is the resistant form of staphylococcus aureus that does not respond to some antibiotics like penicillin. MRSA is a bacteria infection that can cause wound infections, bloodstream infections and pneumonia. MRSA infections, particularly as skin infections are common. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 25-30% of the population is colonized (when bacteria are present but not causing an infection). This bacteria is spread by close skin-to-skin contact, openings in the skin such as cuts and abrasions, contaminated items and surfaces, crowded living conditions, and poor hygiene. More about MRSA
