Breastfeeding Printer Friendly version of this page

Breastfeeding is the ideal way to feed and nurture infants.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends only breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, adding additional foods after that.  AAP also recommends continuing to breastfeed until at least one year of age and beyond if the mother chooses to.

There are so many reasons to breastfeed...

Breastmilk is best for baby.

  • Helps the brain develop, leading to higher IQ scores and better school performance
  • Helps baby fight infection and protect against diseases
  • Enhances visual and oral development
  • Reduces baby's risk of obesity

Breastfeeding is best for mom.

  • Reduces risk of breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers, as well as osteoporosis
  • Helps burn calories to lose weight
  • Helps moms relax and feel close to their baby
  • Easier to do: nothing to purchase, measure, mix, wash, sterilize, or heat

Breastfeeding is best for families.

  • Saves $1,500 -$2,500/year by not buying formula
  • Convenient for traveling Less time and money spent on doctor’s visits
  • Less work/school days missed for a sick baby

Breastfeeding is best for the world.

  • A natural resource
  • Environmentally friendly: no pollution or waste
  • Reduces healthcare costs
  • Decreases the incidence of disease and deaths
