Your blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against your blood vessels. Blood pressure that stays high over time can cause damage in your body, putting you at risk for heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because you can have it for years without knowing that you have it. The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is by having it checked by your doctor or nurse. Have your blood pressure checked at least once a year. If you now have high blood pressure, ask your healthcare provider how often you should have it checked.
